§ 01 / Problem

The challenge

Care coordinators were managing patient check-ins on paper clipboards and a decade-old desktop application that couldn't reach ward staff. Sensitive patient data was being communicated over personal SMS. The clinical leadership team needed a mobile solution that met HIPAA requirements, worked in areas with poor WiFi coverage, and could be learned in under 15 minutes.

§ 02 / Approach

How we tackled it

The first two weeks were spent in the field — shadowing care coordinators on ward rounds, mapping their paper workflows, and identifying where mobile connectivity dropped. We built the offline-first SQLite architecture before designing a single screen. Every UX pattern was validated with at least three nurses before implementation. HIPAA requirements were treated as hard constraints from the outset: end-to-end encryption, audit logging, and biometric authentication were wired in on day one, not retrofitted before the audit.

§ 03 / Solution

What we built

A React Native app with Expo, built around an offline-first architecture using SQLite for local state and a background sync engine that reconciles changes when connectivity is restored. End-to-end encryption for all PHI in transit and at rest. Role-based access control with biometric authentication. A Node.js backend on AWS with audit logging for every data access event — generating the compliance trail required for HIPAA.

§ 04 / Result

The outcome

Onboarding time dropped from 3 days to 4 hours. Medication administration errors fell by 31% in the first six months. The app passed a third-party HIPAA audit with zero critical findings. MedTrack expanded the rollout from a 3-hospital pilot to a 47-hospital network within 8 months of launch.
